Young People’s Mental Health Service in Chard Continues Thanks to South Somerset Mind
The young people’s service in Chard known as the Project will continue, thanks to a partnership with local charity South Somerset Mind. Action East Devon – the East Devon charity who was invited to set up the Project in Chard have been looking for a local Somerset organisation to take the service on.
The Project provides support to young people experiencing mental distress and their parents/carers through regular peer support groups in Chard. The service has been running for two years and is well supported in the community with young people and volunteers actively attending.
Action East Devon, who also run young people’s support groups in Axminster and Ottery, wanted a local organisation who had the same skills and values around supporting young people, to take on the organisation and ensure its financial security for the future. South Somerset Mind run a number of similar support services for young people across Somerset and Dorset as part of their Youth Matters project, and were keen to actively support young people in the town.
Jackie Collins, Chair of Action East Devon says of the partnership, “We are delighted that a local charity, such as South Somerset Mind, with the right experience have agreed to take this valuable service on to secure its future in the longer-term. Staff and volunteers have done a fantastic job in setting up the service in a way that makes a real difference to local young people in Chard.”
South Somerset Mind Chief Executive, Dr Alexander Priest says (about taking on the service) “We are so pleased to have been able to keep The Project flourishing for the benefit of the young people of Chard. We know what a difference services like this make as finding support elsewhere can be hard. Please get in touch to find out more.”
Based at the Young People’s Centre in Chard, The Project offers fortnightly peer support groups for young people in two age groups—13-18s and 18-24s. For parents and carers of young people, they hold monthly meetings, providing much–needed information, support and advice. South Somerset Mind will take on the service from 1st June 2018.
